課程概述

本課程主要目的在讓學生認識歐洲古典時代與中世紀修辭學之大要（時間允許，或會增列文藝復興修辭學），並較之以中國傳統修辭學，俾認識中西語言傳統的異同。西塞羅式的修辭學是歐洲修辭學的閱讀間架，會從柏拉圖、亞里士多德、昆體良、奧古斯丁一路讀到貝德等中世紀大家, 中國部分則從先秦如韓非子一路讀到漢晉南北朝名士如曹丕及宋及清人如陳騤等等，希望學生舉一反三，養成比較的心靈。

課程目標
 This course is to provide a starting point for students to familiarize themselves with Western Classical and Medieval rhetoric (if time permits, Renaissance rhetoric will be included as well) from a comparative perspective. Ciceronian rhetoric will play an important role in constructing Western rhetoric, and Chinese rhetoric since Confucian antiquity, therefore, will serve as an important point of comparison. Such important figures in the history of Western rhetoric as Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian, Augustine, Bede, etc., and their Chinese counterparts like韓非, 曹丕, and陳騤, etc., will receive special treatment.

 
課程要求
 A term paper of proper length due at the end of winter vacation (Consult with the instructor before students begin to work on their papers.), and class presentation is also required.
